明時代末期に、現在の福建省にある漳州窯で焼かれた鳳凰デザインのうつわです。
主に輸出向けとして生産されていた品で、江戸時代初期から日本に数多くもたらされています。
口縁や高台に使用による当たり傷（小さな欠け）が生じており、実用品として用いられてきたことがうかがい知れるのです。

鳳凰の図柄は中でも典型的なデザインで類品はときどき見かけられるのですが、本品のように鳳凰が表情豊かに描かれるものは意外と多くありません。目の大きな鳳凰はまるで驚いた表情をしているかのよう。
裏面の高台内が施釉されていない点も珍しく興味深いところです。指跡も残っています。
高台のまわりに付着する砂粒は、漳州窯で焼かれた呉須手のうつわにはしばしば見られるものです。
